When I dance, I want the public to be moved, and to accomplish this, I put all my feeling into the movements. Whatever I'm feeling at the moment, I let it go by dancing it all. I dance to express my feelings, and what I have to say in other way that talking or writing due to the fact that I'm not really good with words, I mean I can express myselft, but I will never give a message strongly enough by saying it, I need to dance it to convey it. And this is what the art of dance is to me, giving a message through your body, and it's universal, whatever the language or not you're speaking, you can understand the message that is convey.  |

Firstly I want to thank Allison for setting up this project and this forum. How wonderful to give us the gift of a space where we can all come and discuss our passion/obsession And it's so heartwarming to read all your stories and get to know you through your love for this beautiful, creative, difficult and all-encompassing art form! I'm one of those people who is an instinctive mover! All my life I've been someone who does things with her body, whether that was athletics, martial arts, weight lifting, kettlebells or Yoga. I just can't imagine a life where I don't move, expand, shrink, jump, life, throw, collapse or reach! But despite all these wonderful forms of contemporary movement, dance is the ultimate for me. It literally is my life, it is my heart, my mind and my soul. When I'm not dancing I'm working through concepts in my head, I listen to music and visualise the movement that would best fit with it. I even see patterns and structures to play with and move in amongst the most mundane daily objects! I truly am obsessed with this art form and drink up all the pain, torment, mental anguish, fear and those tiny moments of exhilaration that come with it. When I dance I can breathe, and when I breathe I can fully be in the present moment. I am nothing and yet I am everything. I am working from my entire being, even when it is only for the smallest of movements like a pique at the end of a glisse at the barre. The freedom that dance gives me means that I can communicate so much through my physical body, I can access the very deepest levels of my emotional body but I can also be neutral and simply trust my physical body. Nothing has given me greater levels of access than dance, but it is something that I have had to work hard for just to be a part of! All the struggles, issues, rejection and negativity that I have experienced in my dance journey till now mean that when I do perform, choreograph or even explain how I feel about the art form I know that it is fully mine in ways that other things just can't ever be. Dance takes me deeper into myself and in doing so cements my place in this world and amongst my communities. |

I love dance for so many reasons! I dance to spread the Gospel and to show everyone God's love and mercy. When I dance I feel like I'm dancing for an audience of One: Jesus. I have always loved to dance. And once I got into high school I loved it because it was the one thing that made me happy. It was the one thing that made me feel free. I won't lie- I'm not half as good as most dancers out there. My technique isn't perfect. I have and amazing natural toe point and flexibility- but things likes my turn out aren't so great. And to top it off I have a chronic illness that affects every part of my body. To this day I struggle with my confidence as a dancer- never thinking I'm good enough. And I've given into the horrible world of comparison more times than I care to admit. Yet I keep coming back to dance and keep trying to improve my skills. If for nothing else than to give God my best. But I'm learning to not only love dance but love MY dancing. And so far ART With Alli has been a huge help with that. I think at one point you asked us what inspired us to dance. And after giving it a lot of thought I have finally figured out what inspires me to dance: my story. I struggled with depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and anorexia for six years. During those six year I was hospitalized and put on countless medications. I was completely hopeless. And while a big root of the anorexia was dance, dancing was the one thing that helped me. And on a good day, it even made me feel like myself again. Dance, along with God, literally saved my life and kept me alive on more than one occasion. So, now my inspiration is my story and others like it. If I can dance not only for God but for people that are hurting just like I was, if I can bring them hope and healing through my dancing then I have done it right. And that's exactly what I plan on doing as long as I'm able to. Dancing to show others that it does get better and you can recover.

I don't think this is an answerable question because there are so many components of being a dancer and an artist that with every performance, I fall in love with something new. The main reason I dance is because I can truly be my whole self. As a child, I was extremely shy, and I have never been the most sel-confident person. In public, I like to keep my emotions under control. But when I am performing a price of choreography, I transform into a better version of myself. I am able to share my emotions and tell a story. There is no accurate way to describe what it feels like when there is a combination that pulls everything out of you, that forces you to recall every experience you've ever had (good or bad) and use pure, raw emotion. This moment of vulnerability allows the dancer and the audience to connect their souls and appreciate each other as human beings who cannot possibly be flawless. And that is why I love to dance, because there is no greater feeling.
